Is traditional therapy just not cutting it anymore?

You’ve done the work. You’ve learned the skills. But something is still holding you back.

You don’t have the time to devote to weekly therapy sessions

Research shows that clients completing intensive treatment can make as much progress in the condensed format as in standard weekly sessions. This can eliminate weeks or months of living with trauma symptoms and the toll this takes on work, relationships, marriages, parenting, and general well-being.

You’re seeking deeper, more concentrated healing

The immersive nature of intensives allows for a thorough and focused exploration of traumatic experiences, promoting quicker recovery.

You’re in the right place.

EMDR intensives can help you accomplish in one session what may take months in traditional therapy.

What is an intensive?

An intensive is a way to provide treatment in an intensive but shorter period of time. Research shows that intensive therapy for trauma and stress can be extremely effective in symptom reduction.

Intensive sessions are available in single and multiple-day formats. An initial 50-minute consultation/intake session to get some background history and identify targets and treatment goals. A review of relevant previous mental health records and consultation with your current therapist (if you have one) can aid in the assessment.

While many clients are good candidates for an intensive, some may do better with an ongoing therapeutic relationship, especially those with long-term childhood abuse and neglect. Some exceptions can be made for those currently under the care of a trusted provider that they can return to. Clients with this type of history can make progress on particular parts of the events but often are not finished with treatment and need to continue with their regular therapist following the intensive.

  • EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms.

Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala (the alarm signal for stressful events), the hippocampus (which assists with learning, including memories about safety and danger), and the prefrontal cortex (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). While many times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, they may not be processed without help.

Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.

  • Therapy Intensives are more effective and efficient than normal 50-minute therapy sessions. Typically in a 50-minute session, there are at least 5-10 minutes of “check-in” at the start of the session and usually, 5-10 minutes spent on “closing up” or “checking out” at the end of a session - Leaving only 30-40 minutes for deep therapeutic work. Therapy Intensives are different. A 3-hour Therapy Intensive allows for 2.5 hours of depth work. That’s the equivalent of five 50-minute sessions or more than a month of therapy - in a single day!

  • Therapy Intensives are perfect for people that are ready for relief now. If you’re ready to see things change in your life and your relationships but you don’t want to wait for that to happen next year - a Therapy Intensive may be right for you. If you have a specific topic, trauma, or stressor that you want support with - this can be the focus of your Therapy Intensive. The dedicated time will be customized specifically to you and your goals.

  • EMDR therapy helps children and adults of all ages. Therapists use EMDR therapy to address a wide range of challenges:

    • Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias

    • Chronic Illness and medical issues

    • Depression

    • Grief and loss

    • Pain

    • Performance anxiety

    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma and stress-related issues

    • Sexual assault

    • Single event trauma’s such as a car accident, assault, or a natural disaster

    • Substance abuse and addiction

    • Violence and abuse

  • Participate in the individual self-reflection exercises by utilizing your personalized workbook before, in between, and after our EMDR session(s) to maximize the connections you are making now. While not all of these exercises will be collected by me, they will be discussed in session. I highly encourage you to complete them on your own.

  • Unfortunately, insurance does not cover extended or intensive sessions. However, we do offer financing through Care Credit.

  • Yes! You need a computer or laptop (not a phone or tablet). I'll share a link to a program that I can control for bilateral stimulation (BLS). I often conduct EMDR online, and the results are similar to in-person sessions. However, for virtual EMDR Intensives, we reduce the session length by 30 minutes to avoid eye fatigue from the screen.

You’re worth the investment.
